Ex-army chief tipped to be defence minister

(BangkokPost.com) - Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said Thursday that he has been assigned to approach former army chief Prawit Wongsuwan to join the defence minister post.

Mr Suthep's statement came as party leader and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said cabinet line-up would be completed Thursday evening.

Gen Prawit has clean background, has lived a life following His Majesty's principle of self-sufficiency, and has not been involved in politics, he said.

"He (Gen Prawit) asked for time to make up his mind, but I believe it would not take long," Mr Suthep said.

Democrat party decided to find a person to fill defence portfolio after Mr Abhisit decided not to take double post in the government.
